Summer travel season makes national park attendance feel like a popularity contest, but the rankings do not always match the parks people talk about most. Great Smoky Mountains has held the top spot for decades, partly because it is free and within a day''s drive of much of the eastern United States. The rest of the top five are spread across the West, each drawing millions of visitors with canyons, geysers, cliffs, or alpine roads.
