About this puzzle
Distance from the equator is a pure measurement, and it has almost nothing to do with how tropical a city feels. Ocean currents, altitude, and prevailing winds do most of the work that latitude gets credit for, which is why a city that never gets hot can sit deep inside the tropics. Whether a city is north or south of the equator does not matter here - only how far from it the city sits, rounded to the nearest ten miles.
