About this puzzle

Attendance measures people through the gates, which is not the same as cultural size - the most televised event in American sports is one of the smaller ones in person. Some events on this list run for a single afternoon and others across two weeks, and that difference alone reshuffles the ranking. Figures are totals for one recent edition of each event.
