About this puzzle
Peak apple-picking season is right now, and every one of these grocery-store staples started as a single lucky seedling or a deliberate cross in a research orchard. Two are homegrown American originals; the other three came from Australia, New Zealand and Japan – though Japan's entry has two American parents. The oldest predates the light bulb, while the trendiest didn't reach stores until 1991.
